What the year is for
The charm still works. This year it stops being enough.
Felix begins 2026 with the usual instinct intact — smooth the room, find the pleasing phrase, keep everyone comfortable. From March onward that instinct meets something colder: a sense that the easy version of a sentence no longer lands, that what once got a laugh now gets a pause. Closeness this year
Felix keeps everyone comfortable, then quietly counts who noticed.
Closeness in 2026 runs through a fine sieve. Who they are this year
Felix gets quieter and mistakes it for getting smaller.
There is a particular loneliness in this year that has nothing to do with company. What Felix keeps is an editor, not an armour.
By December the pressure on speech is still running, and that is honest to say — this correction does not finish inside 2026. What Felix carries out of it is a working instinct for weight: the ability to tell, in the moment, which sentence is decoration and which one is load-bearing.
