✦ RM ✦

2026

A year that hands RM a bigger engine in spring and a stricter editor from summer on.

AT A GLANCE

RM starts 2026 with wind behind the work and ends it under a harder edit. Both are real, and they overlap.

The first half moves fast: appetite returns, the body wants to work, and doors that were stuck give. From late March a slower pressure arrives on how RM speaks, writes and gets understood, and it stays to the end of the year. Underneath all of it runs a long, quiet reworking of what RM actually loves and who gets close.

  • The year's job

To turn a burst of energy into something that survives being edited.

  • When it opens

January through early June, with the strongest lift around mid-January, early February, mid-April and early May.

  • When it presses

Late May, late July and late September — words questioned, pace forced down, effort meeting a wall.

  • What it leaves

A smaller, truer circle and a way of speaking RM no longer has to defend.

The gas pedal and the brake get pressed in the same year.

RM enters 2026 with more drive than the previous years allowed — the appetite to make, travel, say yes, start the thing that had been sitting in a folder. That lasts about five months and it is not imaginary. Then a second force arrives and does not leave: everything RM says in public gets weighed heavier than intended, and the pace RM wants is not the pace the year permits. Underneath both, a slow rearrangement of affections runs the full twelve months — what moved RM at thirty does not move RM the same way now, and the discovery is quiet rather than dramatic. The year's job is to build in the fast half something sturdy enough to survive the slow half. A sentence written in February will be argued with in September. Write it anyway.

WHAT HELPS

Front-load the ambitious, expansive work into January through May while the current is with RM, and treat the second half as the edit rather than the failure. Put down the belief that a slower stretch means the good stretch was fake.

The calendar splits almost exactly in half.

January opens already in motion — confidence in the body of the work, a clear yes around the 18th. Early February brings the biggest surge of physical drive in the year; RM will want to do everything at once. March 11th is the first snag: a plan sounds better out loud than it holds up on paper. Mid-April repeats February's push with more control. May 3rd is bright; May 7th gives an unusually clear read on a difficult subject; May 26th is the first hard test of RM's words. July is the crowded month — the 7th blurs communication, the 17th overspends on affection or aesthetics, the 27th forces effort against a wall. Late August steadies. September 11th brings an unexpected clean idea; September 29th tests the words again. December 2nd closes the long thread about what RM loves.

WHAT HELPS

Schedule the demanding launches and long journeys for February through mid-May, and keep July deliberately underbooked. Sign nothing worded in the first week of July without rereading it in August.

RM stops keeping people who only know the public version.

RM's affections were never casual — attachment runs deep and privately, and loyalty gets extended long past its expiry. This year that habit gets audited three times, in late January, late August and early December. What surfaces is not conflict so much as a quiet cooling: a name RM used to check in on stops feeling necessary. Meanwhile, from spring, the words between RM and the people closest arrive late or land wrong; something meant warmly reads flat. Mid-July tempts RM to overgive — hosting, gifting, saying yes to a gathering that costs more than time. The recognisable moment is a conversation where RM realises the person opposite is responding to a role, not to RM. The ones who stay after that are the actual circle.

WHAT HELPS

When affection cools, let it cool without a verdict or a speech; a relationship can go quiet without being ended. Say the plain version of the difficult sentence rather than the beautifully composed one.

The push comes first, the proof comes second.

Through the first five months RM has unusual stamina for output — the kind of stretch where taking on more actually works. Momentum builds around early February and again in mid-April, and it favours starting, travelling, collaborating, saying the ambitious thing in a room full of people. From late May the terms change. Deadlines tighten, someone senior or some institutional process wants everything in writing, and RM's language gets scrutinised rather than enjoyed. Late July is the hardest patch: effort meets resistance and the body registers it as tiredness rather than obstruction. Then early May and again in September, an unexpected clarity arrives — a way of framing an old problem that is both sharper and stranger than the usual approach. The year rewards volume early and precision late.

WHAT HELPS

Commit the big, expansive obligations before June and build slack into the second half of the schedule. When late July stalls, cut scope rather than sleep.

RM's mind gets slower and better in the same motion.

The instinct in this chart is to balance, to weigh both sides, to find the phrasing that offends no one and still tells the truth. From late March that instinct gets tested by a year that keeps asking for a verdict instead. RM will feel it as a heaviness around thinking — reading slower, second-guessing sentences, wondering whether the old fluency has gone. It has not. It is being compressed. Early July is the foggiest patch, where RM cannot tell inspiration from confusion and should not try to. The birthday in September arrives alongside a genuine mental jolt, an idea that does not sound like RM's usual register and is worth keeping. By December the self-image is quieter, less concerned with being understood by everyone, more concerned with being accurate.

WHAT HELPS

Let the writing take twice as long and stop reading the slowness as decline. Keep a note of the odd September thought before it gets edited into something more acceptable.

Less agreement, more weight.

RM finishes 2026 with fewer people in close orbit and no real grief about it — the sorting happens gradually enough that the last exact turn in early December feels like confirmation rather than loss. The work built in the fast spring will have been argued with, rewritten and made harder to dismiss. What RM carries forward is a slower, denser way of speaking: fewer qualifiers, less concern with being liked in the moment, a willingness to let a sentence stand without softening it. There is also unfinished business — the pressure on words is still running as the year ends and does not resolve inside it. That is not a failure of the year. It is a long apprenticeship in saying exactly what RM means, and 2026 is the middle of it, not the end.

WHAT HELPS

Take an honest inventory in December of what got made and what got dropped, and keep the dropped list without apology. Carry the discipline forward, not the exhaustion.

A word from the stars

2026 gives RM the engine first and the editor second, and the order matters — the momentum of the early months is what there will be to defend later. The pressure that arrives in spring does not lift by December, and it is not meant to. RM ends the year with a smaller circle, a heavier sentence, and a much clearer sense of which is which.
