For the first half of 2027 RM meets resistance around speaking, writing and pacing: everything takes longer, and the shortcuts stop working. From summer, the same pressure moves to matters of taste, worth and who gets close. From mid-September the ground softens and support arrives, though one old strain about force and timing returns in December.

What the year is for
The year asks RM to say less and mean more of it.
2027 opens mid-sentence. Something about the way RM talks, writes and thinks is already under review when January starts, and the review is not kind about speed. Sentences that used to arrive whole now need three attempts. Meanwhile something slower and deeper is at work in the same territory: the thoughts that survive this year come out stripped, direct, harder to argue with. Two forces pull all year — one that keeps cutting, one that keeps digging. Expect the experience of finishing a piece of writing or a long interview and feeling both exhausted and unusually honest. From late summer the same test moves to what RM loves and what RM is worth, and from mid-September the weather turns generous without the standard dropping.

Build in double the time for anything that has to be said in public this year, and let the second draft be shorter than the first. Put down the habit of matching the room's tempo.

January to late April: the pressure on words is at full strength, sharpest around mid-February — deadlines feel heavier, edits feel personal, silence feels safer. From 25 January to late May a second strain sits on drive and timing, worst near the end of March: pushing harder makes things slower. Early May brings a turn in thinking that keeps deepening all year. From mid-March into December a fog settles over communication, thickest in July — meaning gets lost between intention and audience. Mid-June to early October tests worth and affection, exact around 10 August, with real relief arriving the same week. September brings a distinct clearing: from 10 May onward the mind is unusually inventive, at its brightest around 15 September, just after the birthday. RM keeps letting people in, then quietly checking who was worth it.
Closeness this year runs on a long, slow audit. All through 2027 something works underneath on what RM actually values in people — not dramatic, more like noticing that an old loyalty has gone hollow while a newer, plainer one has become load-bearing. Between mid-June and early October the audit gets teeth: warmth feels rationed, and being available costs more than usual. That is the stretch where RM may withdraw and call it being busy. The same weeks carry genuine ease, strongest around mid-August, when affection arrives from an unexpected angle and asks nothing. The recognisable moment is a short message left unanswered for days, then answered honestly instead of politely.

Every shortcut closes and the long road turns out to be shorter.
The first five months of 2027 make effort expensive. Approvals slow, corrections multiply, and RM's usual method — think fast, speak well, move on — meets a wall built specifically for it. Force does not help; late March is the proof. What does help is documentation, rehearsal, and the unglamorous second pass. Underneath, thinking is getting stronger all year, and by September the ideas coming out are structurally different from the ones going in. From mid-September to late December support widens: collaborators say yes, older work gets reappraised, and energy finally matches ambition around mid-October. December returns the old friction on pace, so RM would do well not to load the last weeks with anything that needs stamina.

Who they are this year
RM loses the certainty of being understood, and gains something better.
Inside, 2027 feels like speaking through glass for much of the middle of the year. From mid-March the reception gets unreliable: RM says one thing, the room hears another, and the temptation is to over-explain until nothing is left. That fog is thickest in July. What runs against it is a hard clarity growing all year at a deeper level — a willingness to name the real thing once and not defend it. There is also a restless, inventive current from May onward that keeps handing RM thoughts that do not fit the old vocabulary. The self-image shifts from articulate to accurate. Around the September birthday the difference becomes obvious even to RM.

When a sentence has been explained twice and still lands wrong, stop explaining and write it down instead. Keep one private, unpublished place for the thinking that is not ready.

What it leaves behind
What survived the editing is what RM keeps.
By the end of 2027 the loud version is gone and something quieter has taken over. RM comes out with a smaller circle held more firmly, a slower working method that produces sturdier things, and a much shorter list of people to whom RM feels obliged to justify a choice. The unfinished business is pace: the strain on drive is still live as December closes, which means 2028 opens with a body and a schedule that need honest negotiation rather than willpower. The gain is not confidence exactly. It is the settled knowledge that a thing said once, plainly, at the right time, outperforms a year of eloquence.

A word from the stars
2027 is not a year of events for RM so much as a year of revision, and the revision touches the one instrument RM relies on most: the voice. The first half takes it apart, the summer blurs it, and from mid-September onward the rebuilt version gets a genuinely warm hearing.
