Lesson 4 gave the chart its rooms. Now we look at the frame around them. Two points and one planet do most of the holding: the rising sign, the Midheaven, and the chart ruler.
You met the rising sign in lesson 4 as the sign that starts house 1. It's also an exact point, called the Ascendant: the degree of the zodiac that was crossing the eastern horizon when you were born. Maya's is 3.8 degrees of Taurus.
Astrologers read the Ascendant as your approach. It's how you walk into a room, the first thing strangers pick up, the way you start anything new. The Sun describes what drives you. The rising sign describes the door you come through.
Taurus rising, built the lesson 2 way, is fixed earth. So the door is steady and unhurried. Maya probably comes across as calm and physically present, someone who takes a minute before she commits. People may read her as more settled than she feels, and that gap is worth remembering when we meet her busy Pisces planets again in lesson 7.
Every sign has a planet that rules it. You saw one pair in lesson 3: Venus rules Taurus. The planet that rules your rising sign gets a special title. It's your chart ruler, and wherever it sits tells you a lot about where your life gets steered from.

Many modern astrologers also give Scorpio to Pluto, Aquarius to Uranus and Pisces to Neptune. That's fine to know. For finding the chart ruler, the traditional list is simpler, and it's the one we'll use for the rest of the course.
Maya has Taurus rising, so Venus is her chart ruler. Now go find Venus: it's in Taurus, in house 1, at 9.3 degrees, only about five and a half degrees past her Ascendant.
That's an unusually tidy setup. The ruler is in its own sign (at home, as you saw in lesson 3), and it sits in the house of self. Everything about her approach points back to the same planet. Pleasure, taste, comfort and loyalty to what she loves sit near the center of how she runs her life.
In practice that could look like someone who makes every place she lives in feel good, who picks one quality coat over five cheap ones, who stays in friendships for decades. You'd write it as one sentence: Maya steers her life by what feels good and lasting, and she shows it openly.
Most charts aren't this neat. If your ruler is off in house 8 in a sign it dislikes, that's fine. Your life just gets steered from somewhere less obvious, and that's where you'd look first.
The second point is the Midheaven, often written MC. It's the degree of the zodiac that was highest overhead at your birth. If the Ascendant is where you start, the MC is where you're heading in public: career, reputation, the role you'd like to be known for.
Maya's MC is 18.3 degrees of Capricorn. Capricorn is cardinal earth, so the direction is ambitious and long-range. She'd want to build something that lasts and be taken seriously for it. Now look at what's standing next to that point. Her Moon is at 18.8 degrees Capricorn, half a degree away. Her private need for security (the Moon) and her public direction (the MC) are fused. What she does out in the world will matter to her emotionally, maybe more than she lets on.
If you've looked at other charts, you may have heard that the Midheaven marks the start of the 10th house. In some house systems it does. In whole-sign houses it doesn't have to.
Whole-sign houses are counted from the rising sign, one sign each. The MC is calculated separately, from the sky overhead. From Chicago on a March morning, those two don't line up neatly, so Maya's MC lands in Capricorn, which is her house 9. Her 10th house is Aquarius, where Uranus sits.
Nothing's broken. You simply read both. House 10 (Aquarius, with Uranus) describes the field of her career. The MC in house 9 says her direction runs through study, belief or the far away. Put together: she might end up in work that looks unusual on paper but rests on something she's studied deeply, like teaching, research, or work across borders.
Each of these points has a partner directly opposite. Across from the Ascendant is the Descendant, at the start of house 7, which describes the kind of person you pair up with. Maya's is in Scorpio, so her Taurus steadiness looks for someone intense and private to balance it.
This is also where the trick from lesson 4 pays off. Maya's 7th house is empty, but Scorpio still has a ruler, Mars, and her Mars is in Pisces in house 11. Following the thread, partnership for her may grow out of friendship or a shared group rather than a chance meeting.
Across from the MC is a point called the IC, the lowest point of the chart, tied to home and roots. For now, just know these four points exist. The rising sign and the MC do most of the work, and they're where you'll look first in lesson 7.
